Who we are
SAWPAC is a non-partisan organization deeply committed to creating a more inclusive political landscape by empowering Somali American women. We understand and champion the unique perspectives and needs of our community, ensuring they are represented in the decisions that shape our lives. Through advocacy, education, and leadership development, we ensure that Somali American women have the tools and opportunities to influence public policy.
Our Vision
We envision a future where Somali American women are not just represented, but fully involved in the political process. A future where they have the power to shape the policies that affect their lives and families. This is the future we are working towards, and we invite you to be a part of it.
Our Work
We support candidates who align with our values, educate voters on critical issues and provide training and resources to empower Somali American women to become leaders in their communities.
What we do

Equip Leaders with Resources for Today and Tomorrow
SAWPAC is a non-partisan group that works with members of our community to provide the resources and training they need to run for political office, serve on public committees and commissions and become influencers in the public policy process.
With our resources, we host candidate training or partner with other organizations to ensure training is culturally relevant and inclusive for Somali women. In addition, we identify opportunities for members of our community to engage and work with the current power structure to make sure our voices and ideas are part of the discussions that impact our community.
Amplify the Voices of Somali Women in the Political Process
Women must have a seat at the political table. Women and children are often the most directly impacted by political leaders’ decisions. Unfortunately, their voice, opinions, and ideas are usually NOT included in the discussions or policy proposals. SAWPAC will change that. We will provide the resources to give them a seat at the table and have their voices heard.
We understand the cultural barriers that make it difficult for Somali women to enter the political arena. But, led by the experience of our founder Fartun Weli, we will smash these barriers and get our leaders to listen to the strong women that are the backbone of our community.

Advocate for our Community and Make Civic Participation a Priority
Somali women and families live across the state, and just like the diversity of the regions of Minnesota, our communities have different needs from access to quality education, affordable housing, and economic opportunities. SAWPAC works with political leaders throughout Minnesota to ensure they hear the voice of Somali women and families and our diverse needs are addressed.
