Key Issues

SAWPAC prioritizes the following 8 key issues in our work:

1. Family Stability

We promote and support Mom and Dad households, recognizing the critical role of both parents in fostering a stable, nurturing environment for children. Family stability is the foundation of a strong community, and we advocate for policies that reinforce and support this structure.

2. Combatting the Dehumanization of Muslim Women and Their Families

SAWPAC is dedicated to challenging and dismantling harmful stereotypes and discrimination against Muslim women and their families. We ensure Muslim women are respected, protected, and valued by promoting positive narratives and advocating for their rights.

3. Reproductive Rights for Muslim Women and Their Families

We advocate for the reproductive rights of Muslim women, ensuring access to culturally sensitive healthcare and education that respects their beliefs and autonomy. Our work in this area protects women’s rights to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

4. Immigrants and Refugee Rights

We support policies that protect the rights of immigrants and refugees, emphasizing family reunification and providing the necessary support for successful integration. SAWPAC ensures that the voices of Somali American women are at the forefront of immigration reform discussions.

5. Preventative Cultural Healthcare Access

Access to healthcare that respects cultural practices and emphasizes prevention is essential. SAWPAC is committed to ensuring that Somali American women receive quality, culturally competent healthcare services that address both physical and mental health needs.

6. Educational Equity

We advocate for equitable access to educational resources and opportunities for Somali American children. Education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty and ensuring that the next generation is equipped to succeed and contribute to society.

7. Economic Empowerment

SAWPAC supports initiatives that create job opportunities, provide financial literacy education, and empower Somali American women to achieve economic security and independence. Economic empowerment is a critical component of overall community well-being.

8. Civic Rights

We are committed to fighting discrimination and promoting equal rights for all. Our work focuses on ensuring that Somali American women are protected from all forms of discrimination and that their rights are upheld in every aspect of life.
